Do I need to pass my theory test before I take driving lessons?

NO, you don’t need to. You can take lessons while you study for your theory.
However, it is better that you learn and pass the theory ASAP,  you will need the knowledge for your driving lessons with your instructor.

Will my instructor pick me up from home ?

YES, unless prearranged with your instructor you can be collected at home.

Do I pay my instructor or Drivers?

Either, you can pay your instructor direct, or by methods you both agree on.

Will my instructor drop me at home after ?

YES, unless prearranged with your instructor you can be dropped at home.

Will my instructor tell me when to book my test ?

YES, your instructor will correctly advise you of the time to apply for test.

Do you have female instructors ?

YES, we have female instructors.

Can I have the same instructor for all my lessons?

YES, you will continue with the same instructor from start to finish unless you request otherwise, we can meet your needs.

What kind of cars do you use?

We have a variety of vehicles, all of which are easy to drive, relatively new and well looked after. We use mainly diesel vehicles, for good fuel economy.

Are the cars dual controlled?

Yes, all the vehicles are dual controlled.

How many lessons do I need ?

That will depend on your ability, the average quoted by the DSA is approximately 45 hours with private practice – if you have never driven before.
This is just an average and may not reflect upon you personally.

What do I need before I start driving ?

You will need a provisional licence and your instructor will need to see both parts before lessons start.
If you have an older paper version, also bring photo id.
An eyesight check is highly recommended,as a car driver you should have your eyes checked every two years.

How long is each lesson?

Each lesson can be as long as you like. We usually teach in 1 hour, 1.5 hours or 2 hour slots.
It is up to you and you can take as many lessons per week as you like. Some people like 3 hour lessons.

Do I have the same car for every lesson?

Yes, you will have the same vehicle for any training. It is likely you will use the same vehicle for your test.

How long will the test last ?

Your driving test will last approximately 38 – 40 minutes. This does include a variety of roads and speed limits and it may also include dual carriageway.
You will also need to provide some Independent Driving,  i.e. driving to a named location without instruction by following road signs and road markings only. See Drivers Tips.

Which test centre do you use?

There are two test centres in Edinburgh (Musselburgh and Currie), we use both of them.

Anything else I need to know?

Please be on time. The instructors endeavour to be early, we hope you do too.

Please observe good hygiene practices – many vehicles are expensive, it will not be appreciated if you are dirty clothed or observe a poor hygiene practice.

Your instructor will display a green ADI identification certificate in his car window (we don’t use trainees but they display a pink badge).
